Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

It’s promising for England that they have played well without Ben Stokes. In the first two Test matches of the summer, it looked like it was going to be another summer of Stokes. England are learning to win in the weeks when Ben hasn’t been able to deliver some magic.

  6. Post update

I quite liked the acid blonde/white he had going for a while. Admittedly, a bit Eminem, but still.

James Anderson has not been the story of the summer but he’s the story of this week because I’m sure he’ll get those two wickets he needs to reach 600.

There’s going to come a stage where Chris Woakes has to become the senior player in this England team. I hope England realise that in English conditions, Chris Woakes is one of the best. He’s a gem. It’s in overseas conditions where he struggles.

  11. Post update

    Stephan Shemilt

BBC Sport on Test Match Sopecial

Chris Woakes is highly regarded by his team-mates and popular in the dressing room. In another era, without the likes of James Anderson and Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes would be a superstar – he’s a World Cup winner, has a Lord’s century etc.

  12. Post update

This might have been a quiet Test match by Chris Woakes’ excellent standards, but he’s taken 17 wickets this summer at an average of 20.05, and his batting was vital to England’s win at Old Trafford against Pakistan.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

People liken Jos Buttler to Adam Gilchrist but he doesn’t have the confidence that Gilchrist had. He is a sensitive soul and he has struggled in this environment away from his young family and it’s a credit to the England management that he has found a clarity in his batting during this series. Just because you can smash the ball 360 degrees, it doesn’t mean you are always full of confidence.

    Ebony Rainford-Brent

Ex-England women’s batter on Test Match Special

Jos Buttler showed something in this Test which was impressive and not something we expected of him – he took 300 balls to reach his century. We just need to see that more consistently.

  17. Post update

It’s been a good Test with the bat for Jos Buttler.

You can analyse that drop as many times as you want, you can say the ball is wobbling – but it’s just concentration. A lapse for that split second.
