Jennifer Brady has done very little wrong. But she has not been helped by the net, which has been in the favour of Osaka.

  6. Osaka holds

    *Brady 6-7 (1-7) 6-3 1-4 Osaka

Naomi Osaka’s pin-point wide serve survives the Hawkeye review to bring up 40-15 for it’s owner.

And the net cord that helped her to a break in the previous game is still on her side.

Jennifer Brady slumps forward as she races forward in vain pursuit. Is the loss of that game the uppercut to the solar plexus that ends her challenge? She is only one break adrift in the decider but the momentum is with Osaka.

  7. Osaka breaks

    Brady 6-7 (1-7) 6-3 1-3 *Osaka

Naomi Osaka gets a little look at 15-30 on the Jennifer Brady serve.

A thick snag of net cord breaks the Japanese’s way to hand over two break points.

And Osaka takes the first – Brady going back into her shell for the first time as she shies away from a big point and tentatively prods into the net,

    It’s a special match this.

It’s wonderful the way Brady has dealt with the occasion and played her own game.

  9. Osaka holds

    *Brady 6-7 (1-7) 6-3 1-2 Osaka

Naomi Osaka streaks through the chalk with a peach of a backhand to move to 30-15 and then lands a lovely one-two punch with a wide serve and then a backhand back the other way for 40-30.

    Into a rally.

And a Hammer of Thor winner down the line gives Osaka the game. The quality is still stratospheric.

    Brady 6-7 (1-7) 6-3 1-1 *Osaka

Jennifer Brady’s apology for her skew-whiff ball toss rings around the empty stands.

Let’s see where the mojo resides…

I didn’t think Osaka looked rattled until those last moments. It shows the level she has been pushed to play at.

This match is an absolute treat.

    Brady 6-7 (1-7) 6-3 *Osaka

Jennifer Brady marches to 40-0 and three set points.

Osaka claws one back off the table with a cracking forehand, but she can’t zap the second out of existance.

Wide off the Japanese racquet and we are heading into a decider…

  16. Brady breaks

    *Brady 6-7 (1-7) 5-3 Osaka

A tight-rope walk of a final rally, both players pushing the limits and staying the course as nerves fray and minds cloud with doubt and hesitation.

And Brady comes out on top!

She will serve for the set next…

  17. Break point Brady

    Brady 6-7 (1-7) 4-3 *Osaka

Jennifer Brady bets the house, car and mother-in-law’s pet chihuahua on a forehand down the line in the opening rally and gets lucky with a net cord in her favour.

If she doesn’t hit it that hard, she maybe doesn’t get that slice of luck.
